One need to understand what is actually snoring. Many can identify snoring through the noises an individual make while asleep. But you need to know the meaning of snoring and how it actually occurs? Or else you are not going to get the right treatment.

I have seen many definition of snoring. But the best definition of snoring that I have come across is from the Medical Dictionary (source:-Medicinenet.Inc), where they define “Snoring as rough rattling noise made on inspiration during sleep by vibration of the soft palate (the back of the roof of the mouth) and the uvula (the prominent structure dangling down at the back of the mouth).” In short, snoring can be identified through the noise that you make during your sleep. This is caused by the vibration of the respiratory structures due to obstructed air movement (breathing) while you are asleep.

During inspiration, air on its way to the lungs passes through the tongue, the soft palate, the uvula, and the tonsils. So when a person is awake, the muscles in the back of the throat tighten to hold these structures in place. This prevents them from collapsing and vibrating in the respiratory structure. However, when a person is asleep, the soft palate and uvula may vibrate (due to the weak muscles) causing the sounds of snoring.

Just like when we speak, our vocal cords vibrate to form our voice, right? Snoring is caused by vibrations that cause particles in the air to form sound waves while we are asleep. The turbulent airflow can cause the tissues of the nose and throat to vibrate and give rise to snoring. Snoring is a sound resulting from turbulent airflow that causes tissues to vibrate during sleep.

When we are breath, air flows in and out in a steady stream from our nose or mouth to our lungs. If we are sitting and breathing, there are hardly any sounds. This changes when our action or movement is changed. For example, when we exercise, the air movement in our body is much faster that when we are sitting. That’s the reason why we produce some sounds as we breathe during exercises. This happens because air is moving in and out of the nose and mouth more quickly. This is caused by the vibration of the tissues in the nose and mouth during the turbulence to the airflow (causes by the exercises).

One of the few things that annoy people more than not being able to get a good night's sleep is snoring. Sleeping well and feeling sparkling good in the morning is one of the few pleasures that most people in the world can still enjoy. For those people who live with a snorer though, the agony of being startled awake can be a pain worse than death.

Snoring affects somewhere between 30 to 50% of the world's population and contrary to what most people believe, it doesn't just affect men. Snoring is common in women too, with nearly 40% of women over the age of 60 reporting to snore at night.

While earplugs are the most common form of relief, earmuffs, white noise machines, rolling the snorer onto his or her back (or from his or her back onto his or her side), and constant smacks from a pillow are often used to help those who sleep next to a snorer as well. These methods aren't exactly cures, but qualify as small little moments of relief from the hideous sound emanating from those you are lying next to.

Actual cures vary and most doctors will advise against the most effective form of a cure...surgery. Surgery has it's own pitfalls, which is why most certified western doctors wouldn't recommend it. Unless your sleep is suffering badly enough by your snorer to constitute a medical emergency, going under the knife to get a decent night's sleep seems a bit harsh. Putting a loved one through that kind of procedure for some uninterrupted shut eye also presents a different sort of problem, but that's a completely different issue.

Natural cures are the only viable options left for stop snoring. For those masses of people who are stuck sleeping with an veritable tractor on their side, a permanent natural cure can be the light at the end of the tunnel they are searching for. Natural cures to stop snoring can come in many forms and wholly are more effective than any of the other methods for curing snoring.

Natural cures come in the form of different sprays, special pillows and dental bites. Different stop snoring cures work best for different people so when trying to implement a solution make sure that the punishment fits the crime, so to speak.
